Dental anxiety is nothing to dismiss – your dentist understands that for some, even important dental care can be hard to seek out due to a pronounced sense of concern. There are varying degrees of anxiety people can feel. Some patients can have no problem coming in for a routine dental appointment, but become rattled by dread when they need to undergo restorative care. For others, just coming in for a regular checkup can instill feelings of unease. Dental sedation offers anxious patients a chance to undergo a dental visit without their feelings of discomfort. To accommodate different levels of anxiety, different types of sedation are available.
You and your dentist can determine the appropriate level of sedation based on your anxieties. Patients with milder levels of concern can be treated with nitrous oxide, breathing the gas while they undergo treatment. After they are finished, the gas’ effects can wear off in time for them to drive home without issue. For patients who feel they need more than this, sedation via an oral conscious sedative and IV sedation are both available.
Your dentist wants to make sure you feel comfortable and safe during any procedure. It is important to recognize that if you need restorative dental work, putting off treatment because of anxiety can actually put you at risk for more serious problems. Delaying something like a cavity treatment will leave you vulnerable to internal tooth problems, and will make a root canal treatment necessary.
Dental sedation is not needed for every patient, or during every visit. However, if an upcoming appointment is provoking anxiety in you, let Scott Dooley, DDS know.
